Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk2 by Herschel Blue

This game right here is the sequel to the Gameindustri. Don't believe me, well it's true, well almost. It's the sequel to Hyperdimension Neptunia. If you couldn't tell. In Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk2 you play as Nepgear, CPU candidate and the little sister to the infamous Neptune. Three years have gone by since the end of the first game and the CPUs are captured by the ASIC and it's up to Nepgear, IF, and Compa to find the other CPU Candidates and save the CPUs and Gameindustri.

This game, being on PS3, the focus of the game reminds me of the portable game scene (Which seemed quite obvious anyway) and the graphical output of the game, being good for the PS3, seemed more and more suited for a portable game system. In fact, the longer I played, the more I kept picturing seeing this game as a great PSP title rather than a PS3 title. Either way, the game is fairly decent.

First glance at the battle system, I immediate thought, and got my hopes up, for a closed area action style RPG. Something similar to the LMBS that the Tales of series brings, i.e. Tales of Vesperia, Abyss, and Symphonia. However, it's completely different. Like in Cross Edge, SP and AP exist in the battle system. Again, I felt a little diverted by the battle system because it looks like action, focuses like a Turn Base Strategy, but attacks in odd randoms. Yes, odd "randoms". The bar at the top of your screen tells you whose turn is next, but looks can be deceiving. Many times I've seen my turn skipped and the monster continued its onslaught on poor Nepgear. Very deceiving, but not unplayable.

A big downside were the dungeons. Having some flavor to the design and no respawn-able monsters made grinding early on too much of a chore. Was it that hard to make the enemies come back? I can understand the mini-bosses, but regular monsters? Going in and out of a dungeon to hunt a monster that there's only one of in each run is very tedious and unnecessary. Especially when you're doing guild missions that are a necessity.

At the end of the day, after you're done grinding and what have you. Through all the cool references from other games that riddle the game of Neptunia. You may find yourself at an impasse with your feelings. The game is great in concept but lacks in delivery. All and all Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk2 gets a 6.5 out of 10.
